Why this exists

Football is a personal interest, but the decisions behind the game are just as interesting as the results. Transfers, ownership and club finances create stories that deserve more than a headline number.

Play by Value is my attempt to turn those questions into clear visual explanations.

What I’m making

The output is football-finance storytelling. Supporting it is a repeatable process that connects topic discovery, research, claim verification, scripting, narration preparation and editing.

A story starts with a question about the business of football. The research needs to explain what the numbers mean before the script can turn them into a narrative.

Key decisions

  • Research before production. Build a foundation of sources and caveats before committing to a story.
  • Separate research from the production handoff. A useful dossier should remain useful as the script and visuals change.
  • Keep creative judgement with the editor. Automation supports recurring operational work; it does not make the final editorial decisions.

How it works

Notion organises the story, sources, script and production materials. Scheduled research supports topic scouting and verification. Voiceover preparation, visual planning and caption timing help carry the story into the final edit in DaVinci Resolve.

The handoffs matter as much as the individual tools. A well-timed caption file, for example, helps connect narration to the visual sequence.

Evidence and learning

The work includes a documented research and production workflow, scheduled research, visual development and production assets. I am not presenting it as a fully autonomous channel or claiming audience growth figures here.

An important lesson is that a repeatable workflow still needs room for editorial judgement: which detail matters, what deserves checking again and when a visual makes the explanation harder to follow.

Project evolution

Recent decisions and releases, newest first.

  1. decision

    Started a drawing-led explanation trial

Trialling evolving drawings to explain football-finance mechanisms, with narration and visual plans developed together.

  2. decision

Refined the storytelling and production handoff

Adopted a story-led structure with a worked example, a consistent visual metaphor and clearer audio handoffs.

  3. Creative development

    Developed the production-system walkthrough

Prepared the framing and thumbnail for a behind-the-scenes look at the production workflow.

What’s next

Use completed stories to assess both the audience experience and the production process. Track where time goes, where handoffs lose context and which explanations people find useful.
